History
Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC. by the Macedonian king Cassander, who named it after his wife and half-sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki. Due to its prominent geographical position, it was the target of various people from the 3rd century until World War II, as it was one of the most important economic and commercial centers of Macedonia and the Balkan Peninsula. Over the centuries, Thessaloniki has never stopped developing and being a metropolitan center and crossroads between the Western and Eastern worlds. Occupying a strategic position, it played a special role in the political, economic, commercial and intellectual developments and activities of the city.
