Rotunda
The Rotunda was built in 306 AD by the Roman tetrarch Galerius, who intended it to be his grave. It is distinguished by its circular shape, from where it got its name and is a symbol for Thessaloniki.
At the end of the 4th century, the emperor Theodosios the Great (379-395) was baptized a Christian in Thessaloniki and transformed this monument into a Christian church that was decorated with mosaics. Various Greek publications have claimed that it is the oldest Christian church in the world.
Visiting the Rotunda is not yet a cultural activity. It is a journey into the city's multicultural past that is worth visiting.
