Modiano Market
The Modiano Market was built by the engineer Eli Modiano in 1922 and is one of the most traditional markets of Thessaloniki. Modiano was a member of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki and had studied architecture in Paris.
The market is located west of Aristotelous Square, specifically between Vasileos Heraklion and Ermou street, with exits on three sides and has been an integral part of the city for more than 80 years. The whole layout and architecture is reminiscent of Parisian markets.
It functioned as the first organized closed market and houses mainly food stores such as fishmongers, butchers, bakeries as well as traditional taverns and restaurants.
It is a pole of attraction for young people, students and tourists of the city. Most of the shops are family businesses for more than two generations.
